Soil & Species

Through thoughtful grazing management, we work towards enhancing soil structure, water retention and plant diversity to create a more resilient and productive landscape. We also are considerate of how we may be contributing to contamination of ranch resources.

Soil & Species Management

Snaplands Data - Our goals are to increase species diversity, increase soil cover and overall improve our soils. With Snaplands monitoring, we have been working closely to establish baseline data which will enable us to create a foundation to grow upon.

Lead-Free Ammo Property - Since 2014, Redwing Ranch has been a lead-free ammo property, reducing contamination risks and supporting raptor and scavenger populations.

Ranch Cleanup - We have made it a priority to clean up 100 years of built up trash and deferred maintenance. Reducing piles of garbage, metals and removing dilapidated fencelines, we are creating a safer space for livestock, people, and wildlife to move and inhabit.

Wildlife

We recognize that a healthy ranch is one where wildlife and livestock can coexist and thrive. From deer and elk to coyotes and reptiles, we manage for a mosaic of habitat types and conditions to maximize a diversity of species. We do not currently have any species specific projects but wildlife is considered in all of our infrastructure decisions.

  • Wildlife-Friendly Fencing - All replaced and new barbed wire fencing is constructed to allow for safe wildlife passage, while still keeping livestock where they need to be.

  • Game Camera Monitoring - We monitor wildlife that are living on the ranch, which helps us understand their movement better.

Birds

Redwing Ranch is located within the Central Migratory Bird Flyway, providing critical habitat for a wide range of bird species. While we do not specifically manage pastures for birds during the nesting season, our grazing strategy is conducive to supporting grassland bird habitat by maintaining diverse habitats with a variety of forage heights and plant structures year-round. Additionally, we keep our grazes short in each paddock (3-5 days in internal polywire pastures) which reduces the overall disturbance of habitat and we vary the timing of grazing in each pasture year to year.

  • Bird Species Count - We maintain a species list on the ranch and note rare or unusual observations..
