Workshop Overview

November 3–4, 2026 | Redwing Ranch, Gardner, CO

This complete CCBB course curriculum is designed as a foundation to enable students to receive basic introductory training in the planning, design and implementation of low complexity “pile” burning projects and an understanding of project complexity.

Upon completion of this entire online and in-person course, students will demonstrate, through exercises and a final exam, an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, and capabilities of an effective low complexity Certified Burner “B” and/or Burn Boss Type 3. Once successfully completed, the student will be able to apply to join the Colorado Certified Burner Program as a Certified Burner Level “B” (CCBB).

Part 1:

The Required Online Pre-Course This online Pre-Course is designed to give students that have no experience or training in Wildland Fire the foundation of wildland fire terms, basic fire behavior and environmental conditions, wildland fire safety and fuels characteristics.

• Prerequisite: The student must have taken S-130/190 to be able to opt out of this Pre-Course class.

• Time Commitment: The online class takes approximately 4–6 hours to complete.

• Testing: There will be an exam that must be passed before continuing onto the in-person course.

• Access: This pre-course is 100% online through the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP). Each student will need to register for a WFLP account with a valid email address. This email will need to be the one that you have used for all course communication. Once registered, the instructors will add the student to the online pre-course.

Part 2:

• The In-Person Field Course (Nov 2-4) This two-day class is in-person and can only be taken once the Pre-Course is passed successfully or the student can prove they have taken the S-130/190 Course.

Who This Is For

For Private Individuals & Landowners: As a private individual, the course is purely optional. However, because the State of Colorado provides limited liability coverage for fully qualified Certified Burners, any landowner or private entity desiring this type of coverage is required by statute to successfully pass this course and complete three separate training/certification burn projects. This qualification will also enable the Certified Burner to apply for the State of Colorado Claims Cash Fund created by Senate Bill SB25-007.

For Public Agency Employees: The course is not required nor is it an NWCG sanctioned course. The course is designed to provide introductory training for employees seeking task book certification by their home agency as a Burn Boss Type 3 (RXB3) and potential advancement to NWCG sanctioned prescribed fire positions.

What to Bring

• Comfortable Indoor Clothing & Warm Layers: The course is hosted indoors, but November weather in Gardner is chilly!

•  Notebook, pens/pencils, and a laptop/tablet if desired.

• Camping Gear (if applicable): Cold-weather rated tent, sleeping bag, pad, and headlamp.
